Students create free environmental education programs with gifts from public
2022 Giving Tuesday and Annual Appeal
Our Learning by Leading program helps us grow the environmental stewards of tomorrow. Please join us in this important work by giving to the UC Davis Friends of the Arboretum and Public Garden Annual Fund on Giving Tuesday (Nov. 29) or anytime this year.
Doris Wu ’22 spent much of her senior year in the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden helping community members from a wide array of backgrounds better appreciate the beauty and restorative power of nature.
Doris worked on environmental education outreach in the Arboretum and Public Garden’s Learning by Leading™ internship program as a member of the student Arboretum Ambassador team. Her team projects included hosting “Nature Rx” outreach booths and organizing “Chair Share” events encouraging people to take a seat and enjoy the health benefits of spending time outdoors. And in an independent project with the Girl Scouts, she created beautifully illustrated nature field guides.
"I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot from engaging with folks of all different ages and backgrounds through our projects,” said Doris, who recently completed her Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife, fish and conservation biology.
Learning by Leading brought Doris tremendous growth as well.
"I plan on pursuing a career in wildlife biology, whether in research, national parks or local organizations,” said Doris. “Learning by Leading has made me more confident in my ability to navigate a work setting, solve problems and form meaningful relationships. I’ve developed a more open mind, a more well-rounded understanding of our environment—and the readiness to challenge myself !”
Learning by Leading has made me more confident in my ability to navigate a work setting, solve problems and form meaningful relationships.
