The project to replace the over 50-year-old Wyatt Deck begins this spring with demolition of the two lower wooden decks set for early spring and the rebuilt deck slated to re-open by winter 2022. During this time, visitors will be directed to take detours. (See images of Wyatt Deck's current condition.)

Often a space for vibrant community-held events and outdoor gatherings, Wyatt Deck has a rich history filled with frequent use that has resulted in the necessity for further maintenance and reconstruction. The project includes the replacement of the open decks and surrounding pathways, redesigned to maximize accessibility, while the existing buildings and covered concrete patio areas will be refurbished without being removed. Despite this extensive reconstruction, all of the surrounding trees will be preserved.

As an homage to the original deck, redwood decking boards and the unique custom light fixture will again be used, but this time, the plan includes an accessible pathway between the decks laid with the Arboretum's signature pavers and steel framing supporting the wooden deck. (See artistic renderings of the future Wyatt Deck plan.)

In addition, the member support group for the Arboretum and Public Garden — the Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden — is raising funds for complementary enhancements to Wyatt Deck via the “All Welcome on Wyatt Deck” community campaign. The campaign officially begins April 16 on UC Davis Give Day and ends May 6, our region's Big Day of Giving, but donations still be made via the university's online giving portal.

Contributions will go towards a new orientation kiosk, landscaping around the deck and much-needed resources for the Arboretum and Public Garden's Learning by Leading™ interns who will host regular, free environmental education programs upon completion. The group also invites anyone who has a story about or memory of Wyatt Deck, to share it via their online story portal found on the Arboretum's website.

"Wyatt Deck is a beloved community engagement space nestled in the heart of the Arboretum, and we’re thrilled to rebuild it with accessible decks and pathways for everyone to enjoy for years to come,” says Kathleen Socolofsky, assistant vice chancellor and director of the Arboretum and Public Garden.
