Last chance FREE basil harvest!

Don’t miss the end of the season FREE basil herb harvest at the Good Life Garden!   Basil will be removed after this harvest to make room for our fall plants, so get your Ziploc bags ready!

WHEN: Friday, September 30
TIME: Anytime between 9 AM and 2 PM
WHERE: UC Davis Good Life Garden – in the courtyard of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science.  click here for directions.

Please bring the following items:

  • scissors or pruning shears
  • a bag to hold your herbs
  • wet paper towels to put in the bag with the herbs (if you don’t have a refrigerator to keep them in for the day)

FREE HERB HARVEST this Tuesday, July 27 from 9:30-2:00!!

In honor of Arlene’s last day as gardener of the  UC Davis Good Life Garden, we’re hosting another herb harvest this Tuesday, July 27 from 9:30 AM – 2 PM.  I cannot even think about the fact that she is moving onto greener pastures in the Bay Area.  We will miss her terribly and wish her lots of luck with her new endeavors.  (In other words, please don’t go!!)

Pretty much every herb is available for harvest (oregano, basil, sage, chives, rosemary, thyme and mint) except the lavender, which, as you may already know, was harvested a few weeks ago.

If you are interested, please RSVP to goodlifegarden@ucdavis.edu so we know how many people will be attending. Directions to the garden can be found on our website: http://www.goodlifegarden.ucdavis.edu/location

The give-away is free to attend; we just need you to bring the following items:

* scissors or pruning shears
* a bag to hold your herbs
* wet paper towels to put in the bag with the herbs (if you don’t have a refrigerator to keep them in for the day)
* water to drink (because it’s going to be hot!)

BE SURE TO WASH ALL HERBS WELL BEFORE ENJOYING THEIR FRESH TASTE!

Our gardener Arlene will be there all day to answer your questions about the different herbs and the harvesting process, as well as to direct you to the correct plants. We ask that no one remove entire plants or remove more than half of the leaves or flowers from any particular plant.

Peas–Keep Harvesting and They’ll Keep Producing!

Last Friday at the UC Davis Good Life Garden we harvested quite a few peas!

We are currently growing two types: shelling peas and Sugar Ann snap peas. For those of you like me who thought a pea was a pea was a pea. That is not the case! Shelling peas are grown primarily to “shell” or to eat the peas inside and not for the pod. Sugar Ann snap peas on the other hand are grown to eat whole, pod and all!


What I have found is that you can eat a shelling pea, pod and all if you get it young. If you wait then the pod become a little woody and chewy. The same applies to the Sugar Ann snap peas but their pods tend to stay tender on the vine for longer than shelling peas, and boy, do they live up to their name! If you harvest them at just the right time–not to young, not too old–they are so sweet and delicious! I happen to have this variety growing at home and can’t seem to be patient enough to incorporate them into a salad or stir fry because I’m snacking too much right off the vine, but I digress.


The point of this entry is to let you home gardeners out there know the importance of regular harvesting! If you want your peas, or cucumber, or beans, or really any edible that produces multiple fruits, legumes or vegetables–you need to harvest early and often! By harvesting our peas the plant will produce more. If we waited until the pods were all older and fatter (See photos.), our plants would get the message, “My work is done!” But we want them to keep kicking out the peas into spring, so we’ll keep harvesting and so should you!

Beet Harvest!

Here’s a photo of a beet that Arlene pulled from the garden just over a week ago! Since it is difficult to get the scale, she included a pencil next to it! Isn’t she the best?

What a meal this beet is going to make! I’d bake like a potato, then add some rice wine vinegar and goat cheese. I’d also saute all those greens with some olive oil and garlic. Yum! What would you do?

Beets owe their bright red color to betacyanin, which also acts as a potent cancer fighter. Beet greens are loaded with folate for heart health along with carotenes known to protect eyesight. Raw or steamed beet greens are high in Vitamin A, calcium and phosphorus.

Give Thanks! FREE Herb Harvest Thursday November 19!

The UC Davis Good Life Garden would like to “give thanks” to all our past, present and future herb harvest attendees! We enjoy having you out in the garden and hope that you’ll harvest some herbs to enjoy at your Thanksgiving meals.

Join us at the Good Life Garden Thursday, November 19, anytime between 9:30AM and 2PM to harvest any type of herb we have growing in the garden including rosemary, marjoram, lavender, sage, thyme, chives, and mint!

Harvest Sage and Serve it on Thanksgiving!

Come to the next UC Davis Good Life Garden herb harvest on Thursday, November 5 from 9:30 AM-2 PM and pick some sage that you will be able to dry and showcase by Thanksgiving!
